The Maple Leaf silver coin has been in production since 1979. This coin features the easily recognisable Sugar Maple leaf. These are considered legal tender, but their nominal value is typically lower than the value of silver at any given point in time. Because they are made from 99.99% silver, these are considered to be some of the finest silver bullion coins in the world. New enhanced security features are used when minting these coins, and each one features a laser-engraved security mark. There have been several special editions of this coin released. Many of them have featured animal themes. They have also been released in coloured and hologram editions. In 2010, a special edition was released featuring an ice hockey motif. These were minted in a very small quantity; only 10,000 were produced. This edition came in a collector's box.
