Since 2006, the gold Buffalo coin has been marked with a standard image featuring the American Bison. This one ounce bullion coin is commonly traded in North America, but it is now gaining popularity across Europe. These are the first 24-karat gold coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint. They serve as legal tender. Market prices for these coins fluctuate; their values are determined by the current market prices for gold. The coin's design was modeled after the American Indian Head nickel.
